Happy Halloween everyone! Halloween is a time for tricks, treats, and ghosts! So where do these traditions come from? Why is October 31st a day full of scares and ghouls and costumes? (Oh my!)
Halloween was originated by the Celts 2,000 years ago, as a festival for the end of summer and the harvest, and the start of the winter. Winter, to the Celts, had connotations of human death. They believed that the spirit world and the living world overlapped the day before their “New Year” (November 1st) and that the spirits would cause mischief. They gave offerings of treats and food in order to please the spirits.
They also believed that this blurring of two worlds gave Celtic Priests the ability to predict the future. This is where the tradition of costumes came from, as they would where costumes in order to tell fortunes. Eventually, these traditions would be combined with Catholic traditions, as the Romans conquered Celtic land.
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!
